Steady Play Drives Murphy To
Flagstick Garrison Open Victory
Eighteen-year-old Sheamus Murphy of
The Poplars Golf Club in Tweed, Ontario topped a strong field of
players to win the 2007 edition of the Flagstick Garrison Open.
The event was contested on June 16/17 at the Garrison Golf &
Curling Club in Kingston, Ontario. As proof of the field he was
able to best with rounds of 70-72-142 (2 under par), players
registering with indexes of 9 or more found themselves playing in
D Flight.
Jeff Ferguson of Cataraqui Golf &
Country Club challenged Murphy on the second day with a tournament
low round of 68 that left him one shot shy of a tie, but no other
player was able to mount a significant charge on a course that was
playing firm and fast, conditions that seem to get the best of
many leading contenders.
Winning is nothing new for Murphy who
has posted wins on the St. Lawrence Junior Tour, on the Maple Leaf
Junior Tour, and at Canadian Junior Golf Association events but
this was his first big amateur win against a field of veteran
players. Helping him was a little course knowledge courtesy of a
win at Garrison just last year on the St. Lawrence Junior Tour.
“I have played pretty well here, “ he commented.
Sheamus credited a lack of trouble for
his success that earned him the trophy and a flat panel
television. “Pretty much I was in play all day off the tee. My
approach shots were pretty good. My putter really held me in
there. No major mistakes. One little hiccup but I was able to
recover.”
Despite the win, Murphy said he had
not entered with a lot of confidence. “My last couple tournaments
have been sort of iffy so it was just good to put a couple of good
rounds together this weekend to help get some of that confidence
back,” he told Flagstick as he admired his newly acquired trophy.
He joins players like 2006 Volvo World Amateur Champion Alan
McGee, 2-Time CPGA Ottawa Zone Champion Chris Barber, and 2005
Canadian Tour winner Matt McQuillan as past champions.
Sheamus will fill out his playing
season this year with a bevy of local and CJGA events. He has
committed to attend the University of Ottawa in the fall.
Flagstick Golf Magazine also sponsored
a skills competition after the first round of this year’s Garrison
Open. The winner, buoyed by a 311 yard shot in the long drive
competition, was Scott Pringle of the host club.
Low net for the field went to Tom
Hossfeld of Emerald Links GC. An eagle on the par four, 6th
hole highlighted his weekend. Rob Knights of Ottawa also made an
eagle on the par four, 2nd hole over the weekend.
